Tamworth Country Music Festival
So unfolds another Tamworth Country Music Festival. A ten day period where people manage to keep on smiling, while ignoring the extreme summer heat. It is a marathon to survive so seasoned festival goers plan their days accordingly.
This is the thirty-eighth Tamworth festival and as a Tamworth girl myself, I have experienced more than thirty of them. Some of those years missing were given to living in other countries. But I have managed to travel back for most of the others if living interstate or elsewhere.
Memories of my first festival, then a three day event, are somehow some of the clearest of my childhood. As a young girl wearing a long floral dress, I sat in the front row at the 1973 Golden Guitar awards at the Tamworth Town Hall. I watched the stars collect their awards, while swinging my little legs, too short then to reach the ground. I knew everyone on the stage though and every word to their winning songs. Lollapalooza is an annual music festival that features popular heavy metal, hip hop, rock, punk, and alternative bands to offer a diverse platform of music. Created in 1991 to expose newer bands to the community, Lollapalooza once toured United States and Canada. Now, after signing a deal to keep Lollapalooza in Chicago, the annual event is expected to be held in the Windy City between August 5 and August 7 in 2011. While the featuring bands still have not been listed, the music festivals future dates are expected to be the biggest in history as Lollapalooza 2011 marks the 20th birthday of the renowned event. Music Festival Enthusiasts Defined As Festivillians
Let’s define the word Festivillian. It has been used as a descriptive word by festival musicians, artists, promoters, organizers, and enthusiasts for many years. It refers to people that truly have a passion for going to or are participating in art, music, and renaissance festivals in particular. Often throughout history words have been used in a societal or urban fashion over a period of time before they become mainstream and defined as a dictionary term. Such is the case with Festivillian.
The first mention of a music festival comes from the Pythian Games in ancient Greece starting around 582 BC. At that time in history the administration of the Games was handed over to the Delphic Amphiktyonia, a council of the twelve Greek tribes, in order to end the Holy War in the past. The games often included musical performances. This might be the earliest historical mention of a Music Festival.
